ANSWERS :

1. Yeast is a single celled organism . There are MANY different types. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the most popular used species . Yeast used in food production work best in warm , moist growing environments with a slighty acidic PH . Another explanation is , yeast is a microscopic fungus consisting of single oval cells that reproduce by budding, and are capable of converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

2. Yeast is used in baking mostly in bread , alcoholic beverages like beer and wine and also specific cheeses.

3. Using yeast in food dates back all the way to the ancient Egyptains when they used yeast in bread making , and beer and wine for a very long time .

4. Yes yeast is used in all beer . Of course not in gluton free beer.

5. Yes yeast is used in bread . Without it the bread wouldn't rise.

6. The alcohol that yeast is used in is fermented drinks like beer and wine.

7. Most types of commercial cheese usually contain yeast. The cheeses with the most yeast are the edible mouldy cheeses for example Roquefort. Other dairy products that have yeast in them are buttermilk and sour cream.

9. How the yeast works in bread is the yeast feeds on the sugars present in the bread dough , producing the gas carbon dioxide. This forms bubbles within the dough , causing it to expand /rise .

10. Baker's yeast is what we use most often for leavening when cooking and baking.
